A nice survivor, this late 1930’s Breitling chronograph watch in all original condition, has been professionally inspected by Localtime.

The dial and hands are stunning and are typical Breitling-style of that period, including the Breitling serial number on the caseback. It is normal for a pre-1940 Breitling chronograph of this type to have an unsigned dial and bridge. The case has lost most of its plating (evenly), houses a Venus Cal. 170 and measures in at 32mm or 35mm including the crown at 3h. Given the crown’s condition, I would say its new. To maintain its originality, we decided not to re-plate the case, especially because of its possible military provenance (the caseback bears the stamping S/1476 which looks like a military marking. Similar S/#### markings have been seen on a few similar chronpgraphs; Breitling, heuer, etc., and have also been discussed on different fora. The main speculation is that ‘S’ stands for the word ‘Submarine’ but to this date we have not been able to identify what these stamps are, who made them and for what reason). It is wearing a NOS grey pig-skin strap. Because of the age of the watch I have made photos with my phone in dayight (if you scroll down), so you can see the actual condition of the watch but also to allow you to enjoy the lovely details of this fine timepiece.

As with all the watches that are handled by Localtime, the listed price includes a written 3-month written warranty from the date of purchase. Feel free to contact me for whatever questions you might have.

Extra: Try my Localtime premium calf leather straps, handmade in Italy!: Really wonderful quality with the craftsmanship evident throughout, I have found these straps to be very comfortable and a great match especially for vintage watches or sporty modern watches that will combine well with this style of straps. They come in 3 sizes [18-19-20mm] and 16 leather & stitching colour combinations. Their length is approximately 87mm on the buckle end [including the silver-coloured fitted buckle and 120mm on the tail end; so not short but not too long either. They have two keepers, one of them is fixed and the other one is floating, for a better fit and comfort. A good quality pair of spring bars is included with each strap. You can see them in the last photo here and/or purchase them separately under eBay item 202481981474. Feel free to contact me for whatever questions you might have.

Important Note: Sometimes I am asked what I exactly mean with ‘professionally inspected by Localtime’. Here is my theory on vintage watches: as a purveyor of vintage watches, my effort is to always do only what is needed to the watch. I do not buy ‘junk’ watches to resell. I am choosy with my purchases and always sell watches that are, to my knowledge, authentic and in good condition. I first inspect the watch, both visually (cosmetically) and then mechanically. If I judge that the watch is not yet in need of a full service then I do not put the watch through a service which, by the way, entails a lot of risks too. Instead, I give it what I call my ‘Spa’ treatment which will include a cleaning, changing of gaskets, oiling, lubricating and mechanical testing. If the plexi is heavily scratched or discoloured and it can not be cleaned, I change it. If the crown is wrong or worn, I also change it. Now, if the watch is in need of a full service, then my ‘professionally inspected’ description becomes ‘professionally serviced’. In both cases, I include a written warrantee with my buy it now price and I always describe what I have changed, if anything, on the watch.

Important Note On Straps/Bracelets:The straps I use on my watches [leather, canvas, suede, rubber] are always brand new, unless otherwise mentioned and, in most cases, I also sell them separately in my store, in different colours and sizes. In the case of metal bracelets, if the watch is NOS, the bracelet is also unused. If the watch is pre-owned with its original bracelet, then the bracelet is also pre-owned, unless otherwise mentioned. Either way, if in doubt, please ask.
